Internet Policy
The Internet is a global collection of computer
networks that connects thousands of computers all over the world. Use of the Des
Plaines Valley Public Library District's Internet computers will provide patrons
with access to the vast amount of information available through these
connections.
The Des Plaines Valley Public Library District has no control over these
resources nor can the Library District have complete knowledge of what is on the
Internet. Information on the Internet may be reliable and current or it can be
erroneous, out-of-date, illegal, offensive, or controversial. As with all other
Library resources, it is the responsibility of the user to select or reject
on-line information for his/her own use. Users are encouraged to exercise good
judgment and discretion in their use of the Internet.
As with other Library materials, parents and legal
guardians who are concerned about their children's use of the Internet should
provide guidance to their own children and should monitor their use of this
resource. Only you have the right to define what material or information is
consistent with your personal and
family beliefs, and only you can apply those values for yourself and your
children as you use the Library's resources. The Library does not act as parent.
The Library staff will provide patrons with basic instruction in how to connect
to the Internet. It is the responsibility of the user to learn how to navigate
the Internet. Printed sources regarding the Internet are available in the
Library.
An agreement with the Library's Internet provider prohibits any unlawful use of
the Internet. Although the Library’s Internet access is filtered, the user may
not use the Internet for any illegal activity or place any material on the
Internet related to any illegal activity. Obscene and/or illegal content is not
permitted. It
is the responsibility of the user to adhere to copyright laws and licensing
agreements. Patrons 17 years of age and older may request that the filters be
temporarily turned off if they feel access to legal information is being denied.
However, all policies governing usage will remain in effect. The Library's staff
shall develop such rules and procedures as are necessary to insure the fair and
reasonable use of Internet resources. The Library District reserves the right to
amend its policies at any time.
